Keratin vs rebonding

The difference between keratin and rebonding, how hair botox compares, and how to choose the right smoothing treatment for your hair.

The short answer

Rebonding makes hair permanently pin-straight. Keratin treatment makes hair smoother, softer and less frizzy for a few months, but keeps some natural movement. Hair botox is a conditioning treatment that improves shine and softness and can reduce frizz slightly, but it does not straighten.

If you want dead-straight hair and are prepared for regular root touch-ups, rebonding is the stronger option. If your main problem is frizz and you want manageable hair with less commitment, keratin is usually the better choice. If your hair is dry and dull but you like its shape, start with hair botox or a deep mask.

How rebonding works

Rebonding uses a softening cream to break the bonds that hold your natural curl pattern, then pressing and a neutraliser to re-form them straight. Because the structure itself is changed, the result does not wash out. That permanence is also the drawback: the treated lengths cannot go back to their natural texture, and repeated overlapping applications can make hair weak and prone to breakage.

Rebonding suits people with thick, wavy or curly hair who want a sleek look every day without blow-drying, and who are willing to follow strict aftercare.

How keratin treatment works

A keratin smoothing treatment coats the hair with a protein-based formula that is then sealed with a flat iron. It fills gaps in the cuticle, which reduces frizz and makes hair faster to blow-dry. It does not permanently change the hair's bonds, so the effect fades over a few months with washing.

Keratin is popular in Pakistan because humidity in Karachi and during the monsoon makes frizz worse. It suits wavy, frizzy or puffy hair where the goal is control rather than poker-straight hair. Results depend on the formula used, so ask your salon what is in it — our guide to keratin side effects explains what to look out for.

Hair botox vs rebonding

Despite the name, hair botox contains no botulinum toxin. It is a deep-conditioning treatment, usually with proteins, oils and amino acids, that makes hair feel fuller and smoother. It will not straighten curly hair the way rebonding does.

If you are deciding between hair botox and rebonding, ask yourself whether you want to change your hair's shape or just its condition. For shape, rebonding. For condition, hair botox or a regular at-home mask is gentler and cheaper.

Which is better for damaged or coloured hair?

Neither rebonding nor keratin is a repair treatment. If your hair is already bleached, highlighted or breaking, a strong chemical service can make it worse. Rebonding over bleached hair is particularly risky and should only be done by an experienced professional after a strand test, if at all.

In that situation, spend six to eight weeks strengthening the hair first with masks, bond-building care and fewer heat tools. Then let a professional assess whether a gentler keratin treatment is safe.

Safety for every treatment

Do a skin patch test 48 hours before any chemical treatment, whether at a salon or at home, and do a strand test on a hidden section. Tell your stylist about any colour, henna or previous straightening on your hair. Chemical straightening is best done by a trained professional, especially the first time.

Aftercare for both

Rebonded and keratin-treated hair need the same basics: a sulfate-free shampoo, conditioner every wash, a weekly mask and heat protection before styling. Wait at least 72 hours before the first wash after either service unless your stylist tells you otherwise.

Cost over time in Pakistan

On price alone, keratin and rebonding look similar at the salon. The difference is how often you pay. Keratin fades evenly, so many people repeat it every four to five months, which can mean two or three treatments a year. Rebonding is permanent on the treated hair, so after the first service you usually pay only for root touch-ups every six to nine months.

Hair botox is the cheapest per visit, but it lasts the shortest time, so it is best thought of as a conditioning treat rather than a long-term smoothing plan. A good weekly mask at home gives some of the same softness for much less.

Which treatment suits Pakistan's climate?

Humidity is the main enemy of smooth hair in Karachi, and the monsoon brings the same problem to Lahore and Islamabad. Keratin is often chosen because it helps hair resist humidity while still looking natural. Rebonding resists humidity too, because the straightness is built into the hair, but it gives a flatter look that not everyone wants.

Hard water in many cities can make any treated hair feel rough and dull. Washing with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and using a weekly mask helps whichever treatment you choose.

Switching from one treatment to another

If you have rebonded hair and want to move to keratin, you can usually have keratin applied to the regrowth and over the lengths for extra smoothness, but tell your stylist exactly what was done before. Going the other way — rebonding over hair that has had several keratin treatments — needs a careful strand test, because the coating can affect how the cream processes.

Leave at least a few weeks between any two chemical services, and avoid colouring or bleaching in the same week as a straightening treatment unless your stylist plans it that way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between keratin and rebonding?

Rebonding permanently restructures the hair so it becomes fully straight. Keratin coats and smooths the hair to reduce frizz for a few months, keeping some natural movement.

Rebonding or keratin, which is better?

Rebonding is better if you want permanently straight hair. Keratin is better if you mainly want less frizz and easier styling with a lower commitment. For damaged hair, strengthen it first and ask a professional.

Is hair botox better than rebonding?

They do different jobs. Hair botox conditions hair and adds shine but does not straighten it. Rebonding straightens permanently but carries more risk of damage.

Which lasts longer, keratin or rebonding?

Rebonding lasts longer. The treated hair stays straight permanently and only the regrowth needs retouching, while keratin fades gradually over about three to five months.

Can I get keratin on rebonded hair?

Many salons can apply keratin over previously rebonded hair to add smoothness, but always tell your stylist about past treatments and do a strand test first.
