What hair botox does and does not do
Hair botox coats and conditions the hair, filling rough, damaged areas so the surface lies flatter and reflects more light. The result is softer, shinier, more manageable hair with a little less frizz.
It does not change the shape of your hair. If you want straight hair, that is rebonding; if you want frizz-free, smoother hair for months, that is keratin. The effect of hair botox fades gradually with washing, usually over several weeks.

Ask what is in it
Hair botox is a marketing name, not a regulated treatment, so what you get varies from salon to salon. Some products sold as botox are really heat-activated smoothing treatments.
Ask the salon which product they use and whether it contains formaldehyde, formalin or methylene glycol. The U.S. FDA warns that hair smoothing products containing these can release formaldehyde gas when heated with a flat iron, which can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. A conditioning-only treatment should not need a flat iron at all.
Hair botox at home
- Wash with a sulfate-free shampoo and towel-dry until hair is damp, not dripping.
- Apply a rich repair mask from mid-lengths to ends, comb it through and cover with a shower cap.
- Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes; gentle warmth from a warm towel helps it absorb.
- Rinse with cool water and finish with a few drops of hair serum on the ends. Repeat once a week.
